After you choose a wedding venue and set the date, the next item on your to-do list will be to design and mail your wedding invitations! While the wedding venue may certainly direct the style of stationery you choose and the design you select, you may also want to consider the current trends. Now, hear us out: there’s nothing wrong with classic invitations—who doesn't love swirling calligraphy?—but if you care about keeping your big day firmly rooted in the here and now, considering contemporary (and sometimes trendy) choices are an easy way to do just that.
In this blog, we took a deep look at the trends of stationery design that have come front and center. While some may be new and original, others might be a blast from the past that we’re welcoming with open arms.
wedding invitation maps
Maps are an easy way to personalize a wedding stationery suite by showing where the wedding will be held, where the couple is from or to share all the events over the wedding weekend. And we LOVE them! They’re the coolest touch to a stationery suite and are so much fun to work on with brides and grooms.
This is a trend that we certainly think is here to stay for a while! Guests will surely keep these darling pieces of your invitation suite to pin on their fridge and share with their friends! Many of them will even bring it to the wedding (especially if they are out of state) as a fun reference point for the city & location of the wedding.
wedding invitation envelope liners
You'd be hard-pressed to find a stationery designer who isn't having a little fun with envelope liners this year! From florals, to solid colors, to watercolor design, envelope liners have been all the rage and we are here for it! This inner layer is the first thing guests will see when they excitedly tear open your invite.
And let’s be honest, liners are a great finishing touch and the perfect place to add fun design elements, like a sketch of the skyline, or a personal detail, like your wedding date.
watercolor details for wedding invitations
Sheer washes of color have been prettying up the 2019 wedding stationery scene! From airy florals to hand-painted maps and even venue illustrations or pet portraits, watercolors lend an artistic, custom feel to wedding stationery This subtle way of adding color to your paper has a delicate, romantic feel when fashioned in pastels, or a bold and wild vibe when brushed with bright hues.
Add the design to elements of your invitation suite, like the reply card or your envelope liner. Or make it the backing of your wedding invitation—traditional on the front, color party on the back.
Wedding invitation monograms to make a mark!
Monograms are a classic wedding detail that can be created in a variety of ways. You can use your married last name initial for a one-letter monogram, your first initials for a two-letter monogram or your first initials and married last name initial for a three-letter monogram. Then there’s the font style – cursive or bold – with or without an icon or imagery and of course the color!
Custom monograms—not the letter-locking designs of the past—are taking on a whole new look, with elements that are meaningful and representative of the to-be-weds.
pet portraits for wedding invitations
And last but not least, one of our personal favorites: including the furriest family members on your wedding stationery! While our pets are super important to us (and arguably great therapists during the wedding planning season), not everyone wants them as guests at their wedding. However, brides and grooms are finding the perfect touch to their wedding invitations are a watercolor portrait or tiny details of their favorite critters - and we are loving it!
Whether they’re tucked away in a venue illustration, on an RSVP or details card or hidden in the liner, the trend of including pets on the wedding stationery is one that we hope doesn’t go anywhere, anytime soon.
wedding invitations with wax seals
Wax seals have made the biggest comeback… you might have seen them on Game of Thrones because they’ve actually been around for hundreds of years (and Game of Thrones is a medieval-era show). Wax seals have become the new hot trend in 2019 and will definitely be sticking around for 2020. With dozens of color options, and unlimited design potential, wax seals elevate an invitation suite! They make each invitation look like a small gift for each guest.
If you’re interested in wax seals, we’d love to help you incorporate them into your invitation suite, whether it’s on the outer envelope, on the invitation suite itself, or incorporated into the tie-around the holds your invitation suite together. The options are endless!
As we approach the backstretch of 2019 (first: HOW), it’s time to start thinking about the stationery for your 2020 weddings! In addition to the details like: who, where and when, couples can personalize their wedding invitations by choosing a color, texture, details, and perhaps adding some of the 2019 wedding invitation trends we discussed that might just complement the rest of your wedding’s decor and the location or venue.
Fortunately, at ElisaAnne Calligraphy, we love working with brides and grooms to create a look that reflects your wedding-day vision.
